Many developing countries have fairly limited abilities to produce higher technology products, so they wind up purchasing a fair amount of high tech equipment from other countries that might have patents in place. That being said, I've worked with a number of companies working on green technology that probably wouldn't have done so without the possibility of protecting the technology that they came up with.
